Luke 14: You Must Count The Cost

And whoever does not bear his cross and come after Me cannot be My disciple

Luke 14:25-27

And there went great multitudes with him: and he turned, and said unto them,
26
If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple.
27
And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.

  1. By comparison to our love for Jesus, how are we to view our family?

  2. If we do not hate our own life, what can we not be?

For which of you, intending to build a tower, sitteth not down first, and counteth the cost, whether he have sufficient to finish it?

Lest haply, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that behold it begin to mock him,

Saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish.
31
Or what king, going to make war against another king, sitteth not down first, and consulteth whether he be able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand?
32
Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sendeth an ambassage, and desireth conditions of peace.
33
So likewise, whosoever he be of you that forsaketh not all that he hath, he cannot be my disciple.

  2. If a person starts to build and runs out of money, what will people do?
    • Luke 14:29-30

      Lest haply, after he hath laid the foundation, and is not able to finish it, all that behold it begin to mock him,

      Saying, This man began to build, and was not able to finish.
      "lest, after he has laid the foundation, and is not able to finish, all who see it begin to mock him, "saying, 'This man began to build and was not able to finish.'
  3. Before going to battle, what does a wise king consider?
    • Luke 14:31
      Or what king, going to make war against another king, sitteth not down first, and consulteth whether he be able with ten thousand to meet him that cometh against him with twenty thousand?
      "Or what king, going to make war against another king, does not sit down first and consider whether he is able with ten thousand to meet him who comes against him with twenty thousand?
  4. If a king knows he can't win, what will he do?
    • Luke 14:32
      Or else, while the other is yet a great way off, he sendeth an ambassage, and desireth conditions of peace.
      "Or else, while the other is still a great way off, he sends a delegation and asks conditions of peace.
    • SO WHAT SHOULD YOU CONSIDER, BEFORE DECIDING TO BE A DISCIPLE OF JESUS?
